When it comes to buying a new home, you have a choice – either you can buy an existing home or build a new one. For the past two houses we have lived in, we bought an existing house as we couldn’t afford to build a new one. But after I was promoted at work, we decided that it was time for us to build a home of our own. What we didn’t realize was that there was a lot of thought and planning required when building a house.
I guess I had always assumed that you would just tell the builder that you wanted a house that was so many square feet, with so many bedrooms and so many bathrooms and they would build it for you. But we learned very quickly that it doesn’t quite work that way. There are so many things that you have to decide on from the color of the walls to the type of flooring that you want in each room. We quickly learned that there was going to be a lot of decisions to be made before they could make any progress on the house at all.
I had also believed that the contractor would take care of everything relating to the house construction and we wouldn’t have to take care of anything else. But as it turns out, we had to arrange air conditioning installation in Indio on our own since the contractor didn’t provide that service. We also found out that the landscaping was our responsibility as well.
Even though our home is coming together, there is still a lot of work to do. In hindsight, it might just have been easier to buy another used house – there is certainly a lot less work involved. I guess we will know for next time.
